A sewer backup starts in the main line that carries wastewater away from your property. Roots growing into pipes, grease and debris buildup, collapsed sections and heavy rain overloading the system are all common causes, and when the line stops flowing, wastewater is pushed back up through the lowest drains in the building.
Sewer backup cleanup in San Francisco, CA deals with the damage the backup leaves behind: removing the wastewater, disposing of contaminated materials, and sanitizing and drying the space. Cleanup does not fix a blocked or broken line, so you will often need a licensed plumber to clear or repair the sewer line as well, otherwise the backup can happen again.
Warning signs often appear before a full backup. Slow drains in several fixtures at once, gurgling sounds from toilets or tubs, water rising in a basement drain when the washing machine runs, and sewage odors near drains can all point to a problem in the main line. If you notice these signs in San Francisco, CA, limiting water use and having the line inspected may help you catch the problem before wastewater reaches the floor.
Some backups come from outside the property. Heavy rain can overload municipal sewers and push water back toward connected buildings, and a blockage in the shared or public portion of the line is not something a homeowner can clear. Knowing whether the problem is on your side of the property line or the city's side affects who needs to fix it, and a plumber or the local sewer authority can help work that out.
